
The Maple Ridge Burrards traveled to Bill Copeland Arena Friday night for their first meeting with the Burnaby Lakers this season. Burnaby came into the game having lost two in a row, while Maple Ridge was on a three-game slide. Marcus Klarich and Garret Winter led the way for the Burrards as they won 10-8 to improve to 2-5-2 on the season. The Lakers’ third straight loss drops them to 1-8; they currently sit in last place in the standings.
Burnaby holds the lead through two periods
Silas Richmond started the scoring for Burnaby at 2:06, but Maple Ridge responded with goals from Declan Fitzpatrick (3:18) and Klarich (3:44) for a 2-1 lead. Sam La Roue tied the game at 8:01, and Richmond’s second goal (8:39) put the Lakers back on top, 3-2. Jack Charboneau (17:06) briefly gave Burnaby a two-goal lead, but Klarich’s second goal (17:46 power play) cut the lead to 4-3 after one period.
Klarich struck again in the second period (8:10) to tie the game. The Lakers got goals from Ben McDonald (9:16 power play) and Patrick McIntosh (10:33) to regain the lead. But Maple Ridge responded with two goals of their own, courtesy of Kaden Doughty (11:10) and Winter (17:43 power play) to tie the game at 6-6. Thomas Vela (18:56) and Charboneau (19:06 power play) scored 10 seconds apart to give Burnaby an 8-6 lead going into the third period.

Maple Ridge takes over in the third period for the victory
The third period was all Maple Ridge, as their defense shut Burnaby out. Klarich’s fourth goal of the game (4:30) and Winter’s second (8:23 power play) tied the game. Rhys Porteous added another power play goal (9:27), and Doughty’s second goal (12:53) added insurance for the Burrards. Klarich (4g, 2a) was awarded 1st Star of the Game, while Winter (2g, 3a) was 3rd Star. Charboneau (2g, 2a) earned 2nd Star honors for Burnaby. Goaltender Brandon Humphrey stopped 36 of 44 Burnaby shots for the win, while Keegan Melenychuk (39) and Marc Russell Rippberger (2) combined for 41 saves for the Lakers. Maple Ridge hosts Langley on Sunday, while Burnaby hosts Nanaimo next Friday.
