New York City FC has added another major piece to its attack, announcing the signing of Ivory Coast international Bénie Traoré from Swiss champions FC Basel as a Designated Player. The 23-year-old forward has signed a contract through the 2029-2030 season with a club option for 2030-2031 and will officially join the squad once he receives his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.

Traoré arrives in New York after two impressive seasons with FC Basel, where he established himself as one of the Swiss Super League’s most dangerous attacking threats. Across all competitions, the forward recorded 25 goals and 15 assists in 80 appearances, showcasing his ability to both finish chances and create opportunities for teammates.

His breakout campaign came during the 2024-2025 season when Basel captured both the Swiss Super League title and the Swiss Cup. Traoré finished as the club’s second-leading scorer in league play with 13 goals, while also contributing during Basel’s Swiss Cup run. He found the back of the net in the semifinal victory before starting in the championship match as Basel secured its 14th Swiss Cup trophy, completing an impressive domestic double.

Sporting Director Todd Dunivant believes Traoré’s impact will extend beyond his production in front of goal.

“We are excited to welcome Bénie to New York City FC,” Dunivant said. “Bénie brings pace, versatility, and a proven track record of getting on the score sheet. In addition to what he contributes on the field, Bénie will also add to our locker room and team culture through his infectious personality and team-first mentality.”

Before his move to Switzerland, Traoré gained valuable experience across several European leagues. After beginning his professional career with ASEC Mimosas in his native Ivory Coast, he transferred to Swedish side BK Häcken, where he helped the club lift the 2022-2023 Svenska Cupen. During that tournament, Traoré registered three goals and three assists in five starts, including a pair of assists in the semifinal victory.

His performances in Sweden earned him a move to England with Sheffield United, where he experienced Premier League competition before spending time on loan with French side FC Nantes. Those stops allowed the versatile attacker to compete in England’s Premier League, France’s Ligue 1, domestic cup competitions, and eventually the UEFA Europa League with Basel, giving him experience against top-level opposition before arriving in Major League Soccer.

Traoré expressed excitement about the next stage of his career and the opportunity to compete in New York.

“I’m excited to join New York City FC and begin this next chapter of my career,” Traoré said. “The style of play, the ambition of the Club, and the belief shown in me made this the right opportunity. I’m looking forward to getting to work, helping the team achieve its goals, and competing for trophies.”

Internationally, Traoré has earned seven caps for the Ivory Coast national team, recording two assists while appearing in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches and international friendlies. His recent performances also earned him a place on the Elephants’ preliminary roster ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As the 11th Designated Player in club history, Traoré represents another significant investment by New York City FC. With proven goal-scoring ability, experience across several of Europe’s top leagues, and success in championship-winning environments, the young forward is expected to add another dynamic attacking option as NYCFC continues its pursuit of silverware in Major League Soccer.
