The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have won their first USL Championship in 26 years of existence.  Under a gray Tulsa sky, the Riverhounds defeated FC Tulsa 5-3 on penalty kicks. The Riverhounds were able to convert on all 5 penalty kicks in the shootout.  Pittsburgh’s own Robbie Mertz, Berlin Jacquesson, Sean Suber, Beto Ydrach, and Chase Boone all converted on the penalties.

Up until this point, both teams played 120 minutes of scoreless soccer. By halftime, the match had a feel that it would end in extra time or penalty kicks.  Both teams in regulation refused to give an inch on the pitch. The Riverhounds did not give up a goal in four matches in the postseason.  Three victories went to penalty kicks, and one 1-0 win in regulation.

The Riverhounds finished the season (12-10-8) and 4-0-3 after head coach Bob Lilley was put on administrative leave, and Rob Vincent took over head coaching duties. Look for an updated story and coverage of the victory celebration.
