In front of a standing-room-only crowd of 6,115 at Highmark Stadium, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds hosted longtime rival Charleston Battery in a tightly contested match that ended in a narrow 2–1 defeat.
The Hounds struck first in the 11th minute, as Captain M Danny Griffin found the back of the net to ignite the home crowd. The Hounds nearly doubled the lead just five minutes later, forcing Charleston’s back line into a desperate clearance.
GK Erik Dick kept the Riverhounds ahead with a crucial save in the 36th minute, but momentum began to shift shortly thereafter. Charleston D Graham Smith received the match’s first yellow card in the 38th minute, and the visitors equalized in first-half stoppage time with a composed finish from forward Rubio Rubin, assisted by F MD Myers.
Charleston continued to dominate possession into the second half. Despite a strong initial save from Dick in the 55th minute,
M Arturo Rodriguez capitalized on the rebound to give the Battery a 2–1 lead. Tensions flared moments later as the Charleston bench was issued a yellow card in the 59th minute. The Riverhounds responded with a triple substitution in the 69th minute, injecting fresh energy into the attack. A golden opportunity came in the 73rd minute, but the final touch eluded Pittsburgh as Charleston held firm defensively.
After the game Coach Lilley lamented the multiple missed opportunities. As the season winds down he stressed the need for consistency to finish the games and collect all three points, which are crucial to a top four finish.
Despite the loss, the Riverhounds showed resilience and tactical discipline throughout. They’ll look to regroup and build on the positives as they prepare for next week’s fixture, at Birmingham Legion FC.
