Timbermen erase three-goal deficit to defeat Thunder

The Nanaimo Timbermen erased an early three-goal deficit and used strong second- and third-period performances to earn a 14-10 victory over the Langley Thunder on Saturday night in WLA action.

Langley held a 4-3 lead after the first period, but Nanaimo outscored the Thunder 11-6 the rest of the way.

Andrew Bowman had a huge game for the Timbermen, scoring five goals and adding two assists for seven points. Noah Manning spread the ball around with six assists, while Colton Lidstone had a goal and five assists.

Colby Bowman got the start in goal for Nanaimo. Despite facing 54 shots, he made 44 saves for the win.

For Langley, Coady Adamson led the way with four assists. Connor Robinson, Jake Govett and Jon Phillips each had two goals and one assist.

Frank Scigliano got the start in goal for the Thunder and stopped 44 of 58 shots in the loss.

First Period

Langley came out flying, scoring four of the game’s first five goals. Jon Phillips opened the scoring on the power play just 2:10 into the contest.

Nanaimo answered to tie the game when Jeremy Wudrick found the back of the net at 4:18.

Just 27 seconds later, Govett scored for Langley to start a three-goal run by the Thunder. Robinson scored at 5:31, followed by Alex Lemieux at 6:02, to put Langley ahead 4-1.

Lidstone scored off a feed from Nolan Ross at 8:51, and Logan Schmidt rounded out the scoring with 38 seconds remaining in the period to make it 4-3 for the Thunder after 20 minutes.

Second Period

The Timbermen continued their surge in the second period. Andrew Bowman tied the game at 4-4 just 1:16 into the frame and scored again two minutes later to give Nanaimo its first lead of the night.

Although Gordie Phillips answered to make it 5-5, the Timbermen controlled much of the middle period.

Schmidt scored off a feed from Andrew Bowman at 6:41, followed by a power-play goal from Matt Boas to put Nanaimo ahead 7-5.

Langley got one back at the 12:22 mark when Nathaniel Kozevnikov scored for the Thunder.

Andrew Bowman scored at 13:03 and struck again just over three minutes later to extend the Timbermen lead to 9-6.

Jon Phillips rounded out the scoring off a feed from Adamson with one minute left in the period to make it 9-7 heading into the third.

Third Period

Andrew Bowman completed his five-goal performance less than a minute into the third period with a power-play marker.

Wudrick added a shorthanded goal, unassisted, at the 2:07 mark as the Timbermen began to pull away.

Langley got one back when Robinson scored at 7:04 to make it 11-8.

Nanaimo responded with another goal from Wudrick, this time at even strength, at 11:57.

The Thunder attempted a comeback with a two-goal run later in the period. Dante Kulas scored off a feed from Lemieux at 12:02, and Govett scored with an assist from Adamson at 16:33 to cut the deficit to 12-10.

Mander made it a three-goal deficit with an unassisted goal at 17:02.

He added another with 1:33 remaining to make the final score 14-10 for the Timbermen.
