It’s not the way you write things up in the playbooks but the New York City Football Club gets it’s first win of the season with a 1-0 win over Inter-Miami after the Herons scored on their own net at the 35th minute. On a sub 40 degree night in the Bronx, 24,489 came out to cheer on the Gents in Blue in their season opener, watching both clubs have goals called off for offsides, first by Inter-Miami at the 20th minute followed just 3 minutes later when a rebound came to winger Matias Pellegrini who fired a laser past goalkeeper Drake Callender nearly giving the 1-0 lead against his own club, but again was ruled offside.

But the big moment of the match came at the 35th minute when a free kick towards goal was inadvertently deflected in net by Defender Chris McVey, giving NYCFC the 1-0 lead. You can see it here, already loaded in the timestamp so no need to hunt for it:

Overall, head coach Nick Cushing was pleased: “I think we wanted to start with energy, and we wanted to start aggressively. I thought we did that, there were some small tactical things we can improve on, which can give us more control in the game for longer moments. I was most pleased with how aggressively we came out in the second half. That is how we want to start our games, especially here in front of our home fans.” You can check out the press conference here:

Next up for the club is another home match at Yankee Stadium, this time against Christian Benteke & DC United.
