U.S. U-20s Ready for World Cup Opener in Chile

Santiago, Chile — The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team held their final media availability before opening the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, with head coach Marko Mitrović and midfielder Benha Kramashi stressing both preparation and opportunity ahead of Monday’s opener against New Caledonia.

Kramashi on Stepping Into Leadership

Kramashi, who comes into the tournament with experience at Inter Miami, the Olympic Games, and most recently a move to Italy’s top flight, said his career path to this point has sharpened both his game and his sense of responsibility.

“Everywhere I’ve been, I’ve learned a lot. This will be my first World Cup and I’m excited for it,” Kramashi said. “From the Olympics to Inter Miami, I take all of that experience to try to help this group and put us in the best possible place.”

The midfielder described his early weeks in Italy as “a positive step” despite the challenge of breaking into one of the world’s most competitive leagues. “It won’t be easy to get minutes or to get used to the game, but that’s the challenge I wanted. I couldn’t let that opportunity pass.”

He also clarified that his departure from Miami was on good terms. “There was no bad relationship with Javier [Morales]. People think that, but it wasn’t the case at all. I’m thankful to the club, the owners, and the players. They gave me more than I could ask for.”

Mitrović on Growth and Mentality

Mitrović, who has worked with Kramashi across multiple age levels, praised his development and presence.

“Benha always brings a high level of competitiveness and aggressiveness. He’s very aware of what he means to this team,” Mitrović said. “That responsibility is a luxury for us to have.”

The coach also underscored the importance of the tournament as a stepping stone for young American players. “This is the biggest stage for this age group. Representing your country in a World Cup is a great honor and responsibility. The experience they get here can help them in any future step of their careers.”

Scouting and Opponent Focus

When asked about scouting Group Stage opponents, Mitrović emphasized consistency of approach.

“We don’t change depending on the opponent,” he said. “Each team has its own style, but our focus is on showing our identity on the field. Right now, the first match is what matters most.”

On New Caledonia, the U.S. staff expects a physically demanding match. “Every opening game brings uncertainty,” Mitrović explained. “They have intensity and physical presence. For us, the priority is to be at our best in the first game and sustain that through the tournament.”

Development Across the Roster

One player singled out was Atlanta United’s Luke Brennan, who has seen increased MLS action in 2025.

“I’ve known Luke since 2022 and I’m happy to see his development,” Mitrović said. “Getting more playing time with Atlanta is important, and he’s become a very important part of our group here as well.”

Looking Ahead

The U.S. will open their campaign Monday against New Caledonia, before facing two additional group-stage opponents with contrasting styles of play. For Kramashi and his teammates, the goal is to strike a balance between collective results and individual growth.

“The U-20 World Cup brings a lot of eyes. First, we want the team to do well, and then personal opportunities will come,” Kramashi said. “It’s about making a positive tournament for all of us.”
