New York City FC returned to Citi Field on Saturday night hoping to build momentum after their midweek U.S. Open Cup victory, but despite controlling much of the match, they were left frustrated in a 2-1 loss to Charlotte FC. NYCFC dominated possession, created wave after wave of chances, and outshot the visitors 23-8, yet Charlotte’s clinical finishing proved decisive in a costly Eastern Conference setback.

Pascal Jansen welcomed captain Thiago Martins back into the starting lineup, while veteran playmaker Maxi Moralez once again pulled the strings in midfield. Early on, NYCFC looked lively and aggressive. Kai Trewin fired wide from distance, while Nicolás Fernández Mercau forced Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina into an excellent save with a driven effort in the 16th minute.

The hosts continued to push forward throughout the opening half. Agustín Ojeda nearly broke through after being slipped in behind by Tayvon Gray, but Kahlina stood tall at the near post. Moments later, Hannes Wolf dazzled with some skillful dribbling before teeing up another opportunity. Wolf himself then tested the keeper with a low strike before Ojeda came inches away, heading Kevin O’Toole’s cross off the far post.

Despite the pressure and numerous chances, the match remained scoreless at halftime.

Charlotte weathered the storm and capitalized shortly after the restart. In the 54th minute, Harry Toffolo found Idan Toklomati in the box, and the forward calmly slid the ball under Matt Freese to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

NYCFC responded with urgency. Moralez nearly equalized with a curling effort from the right side of the area, while Jansen introduced Talles Magno in search of fresh attacking energy. Raul Gustavo then got on the end of a dangerous Moralez cross but could not direct his effort on target.

As time ticked away, New York City continued to commit numbers forward. Wolf narrowly missed with a curling attempt, and Parks delivered a cross that Talles Magno headed wide. It was the kind of night where the final touch simply would not come.

Then came the dagger. In the 90th minute, Charlotte doubled their lead when Kerwin Vargas finished a quick attacking move assisted by Pep Biel, with Wilfried Zaha also involved in the buildup.

Fernández Mercau provided a spark deep into stoppage time, blasting a left-footed shot into the top corner from outside the box in the 93rd minute. It was his team-leading sixth goal of the MLS season, but it arrived too late to rescue points for the hosts.

The final statistics told the story of frustration. NYCFC finished with nearly 57% possession, eight shots on target, six corner kicks, and 90% passing accuracy, but Charlotte’s efficiency in front of goal made the difference.

For New York City FC, it was a night of missed opportunities. The performance contained positives in buildup play, possession, and chance creation, but the lack of finishing and two costly defensive moments left them empty-handed at home.
