New York City FC has officially named Robin Nicholls as the Club’s new Academy Director, marking a significant addition to the organization’s long-term development strategy. Nicholls joins NYCFC from Sunderland AFC, where he has played a key role in the Academy setup since 2022. He will begin his new duties on June 1, 2026, following the conclusion of Sunderland’s current campaign.
Nicholls arrives with an impressive track record of nurturing and elevating young talent. Speaking about his appointment, he emphasized both the honor of taking on the role and the vast potential within New York City’s diverse player pool.
“The opportunity of being appointed as the new Academy Director for New York City FC is an honor,” Nicholls said. “From an Academy perspective, the pathway and opportunity is really important, but the actual city that your Academy operates in is key because that’s the catchment area where the players are going to come from. New York itself is not only a fantastic city, but the background of the people who live there, the different socioeconomic backgrounds, means the potential for talent is exceptional.”
Nicholls described New York City as one of the most diverse talent environments in the world, and he expressed a strong desire to develop that potential into players capable of competing at the highest levels. “My goal is to have players come from New York City FC’s Academy who go on to dominate the best leagues in the world—players who compete in World Cups, Champions League, and at the highest levels,” he said. “Having a system that consistently produces those players is the ultimate aim.”
He also highlighted the importance of continued alignment between the Academy and NYCFC’s First Team, especially under Head Coach Pascal Jansen, known for giving meaningful opportunities to young players. Nicholls pointed to the upcoming Etihad Park complex as another major advantage for the Club’s future development pipeline.

Nicholls joins NYCFC after helping guide Sunderland AFC through a transformative period. The club secured promotion to the Premier League in 2025, ending an eight-year absence from the top flight. The Academy was instrumental in that achievement: Sunderland totaled 11,500 minutes played by Academy graduates during the campaign, with youth products accounting for 26% of all league minutes. Academy players made more than 152 appearances across the season, averaging three graduates in every matchday XI.
Several standouts emerged, including forward Tommy Watson, whose stoppage-time winner in the Playoff Final against Sheffield United secured Sunderland’s promotion. Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson delivered Man of the Match heroics, while captain Dan Neil and young midfielder Chris Rigg—who became the youngest player ever to start a Playoff Final—showcased the strength of Sunderland’s youth development model under Nicholls’ leadership.
NYCFC CEO Brad Sims expressed excitement about the appointment. “Robin is an impressive and highly motivated leader with a strong track record of developing young talent and a clear passion for nurturing talent,” Sims said. “Our Academy is a crucial part of the Club’s identity and long-term success, and Robin’s vision and leadership will play an important role in strengthening our youth player development.”
Prior to Sunderland, Nicholls spent six years at Southampton FC’s Academy, where he served as Assistant Academy Manager and contributed to the club’s U18 success, including a South Group title and national runner-up finish in 2021.
NYCFC welcomes Nicholls as the Club looks toward an ambitious next chapter in cultivating the next generation of New York City football talent.
