NEW YORK — New York City FC has secured one of its longest-serving defenders for the foreseeable future, announcing Thursday that Kevin O’Toole has signed a contract extension through the 2028/29 season, with a club option for the 2029/30 campaign.
Since being selected in the second round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, O’Toole has developed into a reliable fixture for the Boys in Blue. The Montclair, New Jersey native has made 111 appearances across all competitions, contributing two goals and four assists while establishing himself as one of the club’s most consistent performers.
Sporting Director Todd Dunivant praised O’Toole’s growth and commitment to the organization.
“We’re pleased to have Kevin continue with New York City FC,” Dunivant said. “Kevin has earned the trust of his teammates and coaches through the consistency and professionalism he brings every day. Kevin will continue to be an important member of our group moving forward.”
One of the defining moments of O’Toole’s career came during the 2022 Campeones Cup, when he made his first professional start against Liga MX champions Atlas FC and helped New York City FC lift the trophy.
His importance to the club continued to grow, reaching another milestone during the 2025 Eastern Conference Semifinal, when he made his 100th appearance for NYCFC across all competitions. The achievement made him just the 19th player in club history to join the Century Club while helping New York City advance to the Eastern Conference Final.
O’Toole said extending his stay with his hometown club was an easy decision.
“Signing another contract with New York City FC means a great deal to me,” O’Toole said. “The Club has continued to put its trust in me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep representing New York City. My mentality has always been to put the team first, and I’ll continue doing everything I can to help this group compete for trophies.”
The defender also earned another career milestone in late 2025, receiving his first senior international call-up with the Republic of Ireland for FIFA World Cup qualifying.
With another long-term contract now in place, New York City FC has ensured one of its most dependable defenders will remain a key part of the club’s plans as it continues its pursuit of future trophies.
