Last night, the Albany FireWolves hosted the Saskatchewan Rush in Game 1 of the regular season, and fans were treated to a barnburner of a contest. In a game that saw multiple lead changes, a goal within the last 15 seconds of regulation, and a bit of extra lacrosse, it seemed fans got everything they could have wanted — except a FireWolves victory, as they fell in overtime, 10-9.

The FireWolves fought valiantly throughout the game, but after a back-and-forth battle, it was Saskatchewan’s resilience in the extra period that sealed the win. Both teams came out with intensity, but it was the Rush who managed to capitalize in the final moments, securing the win in overtime.

Despite the loss, Albany showed plenty of promise. The team’s three NLL debutants—Dyson Williams, Zac Masson, and Will Johansen—played significant roles in the game. Both Williams and Johansen contributed offensively, while Masson made his presence felt on defense. Williams, the 2023 first overall pick out of Duke University, showcased his speed and skill in his debut, scoring a big goal for the FireWolves in his first game. Johansen, also making his NLL debut, is just a year removed from a gruesome leg injury that sidelined him last season. He was fueled by his comeback, finishing the game with one goal and a remarkable nine loose balls. Masson, a defenseman who had been waiting for his shot since 2017, also looked solid in his first NLL appearance.

Veteran Eric Fannell, another new addition to the roster, also made his mark, providing strength and grit in key moments. The FireWolves’ offensive attack was dynamic, but ultimately, they could not hold off Saskatchewan’s explosive offensive unit, which rallied in the final moments to force overtime.

The overtime period was intense, with both teams battling for possession and searching for the game-winning goal. The Rush capitalized on a late opportunity, sealing the win with a goal that left the FireWolves heartbroken.

As the FireWolves head back to the drawing board, they will look to bounce back in their next game against the Toronto Rock, who also started the season 0-1. Though the overtime defeat stings, Albany’s resilience and potential were on full display, and fans can expect the FireWolves to come back stronger as the season progresses.

The FireWolves will now focus on regrouping as they prepare for their next matchup. With a strong foundation laid by their young stars and seasoned veterans alike, they’re ready to turn the page and fight for their first NLL championship.
