New York City FC earned a dramatic late victory on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Philadelphia Union 2-1 at Subaru Park to secure their first win of the 2026 MLS Regular Season. In a match that once again underscored the razor-thin margins between these Eastern Conference rivals, it was defender Tayvon Gray who delivered the decisive moment, rising at the back post in the ninth minute of stoppage time to head home a thrilling winner.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 36th minute through forward Hannes Wolf, who capped off a fluid attacking sequence emblematic of Head Coach Pascal Jansen’s preferred identity. Wolf’s left-footed finish from the center of the box, struck with precision into the top-right corner, gave New York City a deserved first-half lead. The goal carried an expected goals (xG) value of 48 percent and rewarded a spell in which the ‘Boys in Blue’ began to assert themselves after weathering an early surge from Philadelphia.

New York City controlled 52.8 percent of possession and finished the match with 10 shots on target compared to Philadelphia’s five, consistently creating danger even without a traditional number nine leading the line. Midfielder Keaton Parks, making his first start since May 2025, played the full 90 minutes and offered a creative presence between the lines. Though still building match fitness, Parks’ return adds an important dimension to the squad as the season progresses.

The second half, however, tested New York City’s resilience. As anticipated, Philadelphia grew increasingly direct in pursuit of an equalizer. That breakthrough came in the 89th minute when Indiana Vassilev converted from the penalty spot, seemingly salvaging a point for the home side. Moments later, the Union were reduced to 10 men after Olwethu Makhanya received a red card in stoppage time, tilting momentum back toward the visitors.

Rather than settling, New York City pressed for a winner. Their persistence paid off in the 90+9’ minute when Agustín Ojeda delivered a cross that found Gray unmarked at the back post. The defender powered his header into the top-left corner, sealing not only his second career MLS goal but also the first stoppage-time winner across the league this season.

The result improves New York City FC’s record to 1-0-1 (W-L-D), marking the first time since 2019 that the club has collected points from its opening two regular season matches. Historically, the rivalry remains tightly contested, with New York City now holding an 11-11-2 record against Philadelphia in league play. Notably, 15 of the 24 regular season meetings between the clubs have been decided by one goal or ended in a draw.

There were additional milestones on the afternoon. At 39 years and two days old, Maxi Moralez once again set the club record as its oldest player to start and appear in a match. Hannes Wolf’s opener marked his first goal of 2026 after an 11-goal campaign last season, while both Ojeda and Talles Magno registered their first assists of the new campaign.

In a venue traditionally difficult for visitors, New York City demonstrated composure, identity, and grit. With momentum secured and a home opener on the horizon, the dramatic victory in Philadelphia could prove an early defining moment in their 2026 campaign.
