The U.S. Men’s National Team continued its memorable FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a determined 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, securing its first knockout-stage win since 2002 and booking a place in the Round of 16 against Belgium.
Playing before a patriotic crowd of 68,827 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, the Americans once again showcased the resilience and composure that have defined their tournament under head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Despite finishing the final half hour with only 10 men, the United States produced one of its most complete performances of the competition.
After controlling possession for much of the opening half, the U.S. found it difficult to break through Bosnia and Herzegovina’s organized defensive block. Goalkeeper Matt Freese was called into action early, making a pair of outstanding saves to keep the match scoreless and preserve momentum for the home side.
The breakthrough finally arrived just before halftime. Following strong defensive work from captain Tim Ream and quick movement through midfield, Malik Tillman threaded a dangerous ball toward Folarin Balogun. Despite multiple deflections and pressure from Bosnian defenders, Balogun stayed composed and calmly slotted home the opening goal in the 45th minute, giving the Americans a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half presented an entirely new challenge. In the 64th minute, Balogun was shown a red card following a VAR review, forcing the United States to play the remainder of regulation and stoppage time with 10 players. Rather than retreating under pressure, the Americans responded with discipline and confidence.
Their defining moment came in the 82nd minute when Sergiño Dest earned a dangerous free kick just outside the penalty area. Tillman stepped up and curled a brilliant effort over the wall that clipped the fingertips of goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj before finding the back of the net. The spectacular strike doubled the U.S. advantage and effectively sealed the victory despite Bosnia and Herzegovina’s late push.
Freese and the American back line remained organized throughout the closing minutes, recording the team’s second clean sheet of the tournament and preserving one of the most significant World Cup victories in recent program history.
The match also featured several historic milestones. Balogun became just the third American to score three goals in a single FIFA World Cup, joining Bert Patenaude and Landon Donovan. Tillman’s free kick marked his first World Cup goal and made him only the second U.S. player since 1966 to score directly from a free kick in the tournament. Freese collected his second World Cup clean sheet, tying him for the most in USMNT history by a goalkeeper.
With three victories already in FIFA World Cup 2026, the United States has reached new heights under Mauricio Pochettino, who now owns the most World Cup wins by any USMNT head coach. The challenge only grows tougher, however, as the Americans now prepare for a highly anticipated Round of 16 showdown against Belgium with a place in the quarterfinals on the line.
