The United States Men’s National Team earned an important 3-2 victory over 14th-ranked Senegal on Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, taking another positive step toward the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Playing together for the first time since Mauricio Pochettino announced his 26-man World Cup roster, the Americans delivered an energetic performance in front of 57,741 fans at Bank of America Stadium. The match marked the first-ever meeting between the two nations and provided a valuable test against one of Africa’s strongest programs.
The U.S. wasted little time establishing control. After dominating possession early, the breakthrough arrived in the seventh minute when Christian Pulisic delivered a perfect low cross that Sergiño Dest smashed home for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Dest’s third at the international level and rewarded the Americans for a fast and confident start.
Just over ten minutes later, the United States doubled its advantage. Ricardo Pepi, continuing his impressive run of form, found Pulisic inside the penalty area. The U.S. captain calmly rounded goalkeeper Mory Diaw before slotting home his 33rd international goal, extending the lead to 2-0.
Senegal, however, showed why it remains one of the world’s most respected national teams. Superstar forward Sadio Mané pulled a goal back shortly before halftime and then capitalized on a defensive turnover early in the second half to level the match at 2-2.
Despite seeing two potential second-half goals disallowed, the Americans continued to push forward. Their persistence paid off in the 63rd minute when Tim Weah’s dangerous delivery created chaos inside the box, allowing Folarin Balogun to finish clinically and restore the U.S. lead.
The victory highlighted several encouraging performances. Pulisic finished with a goal and assist, recording his 52nd career goal contribution and moving closer to the top of several all-time USMNT records. Pepi registered his second consecutive match with an assist, while Balogun continued to strengthen his case as a key attacking option heading into the World Cup.
The match also featured a memorable milestone for goalkeeper Chris Brady, who earned his first senior international cap after entering at halftime.
With the win secured, the United States now turns its attention to its final World Cup warm-up match against Germany on June 6 in Chicago. As the countdown to the World Cup continues, Pochettino’s squad appears to be building momentum at exactly the right time.
